KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Summer is peak season for braces emergencies, and a single broken bracket from a 30-second food choice can add weeks to your treatment timeline.
  • Not all risky foods are equal. Our 5-tier risk system separates foods that are an absolute no from foods that just need a small modification to be safe.
  • Sticky and chewy foods are the worst offenders, and they happen to be the signature foods of every Jersey Shore boardwalk. Taffy, caramel, gum, and chewy candies all sit in Tier 1.
  • Invisalign patients have more freedom, but only when aligners are out. Don't drink anything except water with aligners in, and brush before reinserting them.
  • If something breaks, call us immediately. Our team across Wildwood, Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Marmora, and Somers Point is here to get you back on track quickly.

Introduction

It's Memorial Day weekend on the Wildwood Boardwalk. Your daughter is squinting against the sun, holding $5 and wearing a brand-new pair of braces. Her choices in front of her: a saltwater taffy from one of the boardwalk shops, a slice of pizza from the corner stand, an Italian ice from a frozen treat counter, or a funnel cake the size of her head. Three of those will land you in our office Tuesday morning. The fourth is actually fine.

Welcome to summer down the Shore, where the food is everywhere, and parents of kids in braces are quietly playing detective at every meal. At Brayces Orthodontics, Dr. Bray, Dr. Tarby, Dr. Lerman, and Dr. Chenman have helped Jersey Shore families navigate exactly this question for more than 40 years across our five locations in Wildwood, Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Marmora, and Somers Point. This guide introduces our 5-tier food risk system, the simple framework we share with patients to make smart food choices anywhere this summer takes you.

The 5-Tier Food Risk System

Instead of memorizing endless lists of foods to avoid, our patients learn a simple 5-tier risk system. Each food you encounter falls into one of five tiers, and once you know which tier you're dealing with, you know exactly what to do. The system works at the boardwalk, the backyard cookout, the pool, the diner, or the family road trip. Here is the framework.

1 Definitely Avoid

Highest risk — no exceptions

2 Avoid Unless Modified

High risk — safe only with prep

3 Proceed With Care

Moderate risk — slow down and pay attention

4 Safe With Good Habits

Low risk — clean your teeth after

5 Always Safe — Embrace These

Lowest risk — enjoy freely

Tier 1: Definitely Avoid

These are the absolute no foods for braces patients. There's no acceptable modification, no clever workaround. If you have braces, these foods are off the menu until your braces come off.

TIER 1

Definitely Avoid

Highest risk — no exceptions

Foods in this tier:

  • Saltwater taffy and other chewy candies
  • Caramel, toffee, and Sugar Daddies
  • Hard candies, jawbreakers, and lollipops
  • Bubble gum and chewing gum
  • Ice cubes (chewing)
  • Whole nuts and hard popcorn kernels

Why this tier:

These foods either pull brackets loose with their stickiness, snap brackets off with their hardness, or do both. They are the single biggest cause of orthodontic emergencies we see across all five offices.

What to do:

Skip these entirely while in braces. The Wildwood Boardwalk taffy shops are not your friends right now. The good news is your braces will come off in 12 to 24 months, and you can enjoy them all season after that.

Tier 2: Avoid Unless Modified

These foods are dangerous in their default form but become safe with a simple modification. They are the most common source of avoidable emergencies because patients don't realize that a small change can make all the difference.

TIER 2

Avoid Unless Modified

High risk — safe only with prep

Foods in this tier:

  • Corn on the cob (cut kernels off the cob first)
  • Whole apples or pears (slice them first)
  • Ribs on the bone (pulled meat is safe)
  • Hard pretzels (soft pretzel bites are fine)
  • Bagels and crusty bread (cut into small pieces, chew with back teeth)
  • Pizza crusts (pizza by the slice is fine; skip the hard crusts)

Why this tier:

These foods damage braces only when bitten directly with front teeth. The fix is removing the bite-into action: slice, cut, pull, or break before eating, and chew with your back teeth.

What to do:

Take 30 seconds before eating to prep the food. Indiana sweet corn off the cob is delicious. Pulled pork sandwiches are perfect for backyard barbecues. Sliced apples are still apples. The food becomes safe; the experience stays great all summer long.

Tier 3: Proceed With Care

These foods are not off-limits, but they require slow eating and good awareness. Patients who get into trouble with these foods are usually distracted, in a hurry, or eating in a way that puts unusual force on a single bracket.

TIER 3

Proceed With Care

Moderate risk — slow down and pay attention

Foods in this tier:

  • Tortilla chips and crispy snacks
  • Granola and trail mix without whole nuts
  • Fully-popped popcorn (avoid kernels at the bottom of the bag)
  • Crusty rolls and hard breads (cut into small pieces)
  • Raw vegetables (cut into small pieces, eat with back teeth)
  • Jerky in small thin strips (proceed cautiously)

Why this tier:

These foods can cause damage when you eat them quickly, distractedly, or with front teeth. Slowing down and chewing carefully eliminates most of the risk.

What to do:

Pay attention while eating. No big bites, no rushing. Chew slowly with your back teeth. If you can't slow down because you're at a sports game, family party, or busy event, save these foods for a calmer moment.

Tier 4: Safe With Good Habits

These foods are generally safe for braces, but they still require good hygiene habits to avoid white spots and gum issues during treatment. Most patients can eat these freely as long as they keep their teeth clean.

TIER 4

Safe With Good Habits

Low risk — clean your teeth after

Foods in this tier:

  • Pizza (avoid the crusts)
  • Sandwiches and wraps
  • Soft pasta dishes and lasagna
  • Burgers and grilled chicken (cut into small pieces if needed)
  • Pancakes, waffles, and muffins
  • Most cooked vegetables, soft cheeses, and yogurt

Why this tier:

These foods don't damage braces directly, but they can contribute to white spots or cavities if food particles stay around brackets. Hygiene is the key variable.

What to do:

Brush after meals when possible, or at minimum rinse thoroughly with water. Floss daily with floss threaders or a water flosser. These foods are part of a normal life with braces; they just need a brush afterward.

Tier 5: Always Safe — Embrace These

These are the safest foods for braces and the foods you can lean into during the summer. They support your treatment by reducing risk, supporting oral health, and being easy on appliances.

TIER 5

Always Safe — Embrace These

Lowest risk — enjoy freely

Foods in this tier:

  • Yogurt, smoothies, and ice cream (without hard mix-ins)
  • Soft fruits (bananas, peaches, berries, ripe pears)
  • Soft-serve, sorbet, and Italian ice (no hard toppings)
  • Scrambled eggs and soft omelets
  • Mashed potatoes and soft mac and cheese
  • Soft fish, soft chicken, and ground meats

Why this tier:

These foods are nearly impossible to break braces with. They are also gentle on sore teeth after adjustments and support good nutrition during treatment.

What to do:

Lean into Tier 5 foods, especially in the first few days after each adjustment when your teeth are sore. A Jersey Shore Italian ice without hard candy toppings is perfect after a tightening appointment.

What to Do If Something Breaks This Summer

Despite the best system, brackets sometimes break. Here is the simple action plan.

  • Stay calm. Most broken brackets are inconveniences, not emergencies.
  • Apply orthodontic wax to any sharp wire or bracket edge poking your cheek. Wax is your most important first-aid tool.
  • Call us promptly at 609-272-9237. Our central scheduling line connects you with the right office across Wildwood, Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Marmora, and Somers Point.
  • Don't try to fix it yourself. Glue, wire cutters, and household tools have no place near braces. Call us instead. We are here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child eat Italian ice with braces?

Yes, Italian ice is generally safe for braces as long as it does not have hard candy toppings. The shaved or finely crushed ice texture is soft enough that it won't damage brackets. Just avoid biting into anything still frozen solid, and skip the hard candy mix-ins. A clean Jersey Shore Italian ice is a Tier 5 food, perfectly safe.

What about saltwater taffy from the Wildwood Boardwalk?

Saltwater taffy is one of the worst possible foods for braces. It's sticky enough to pull brackets right off your teeth and chewy enough to bend wires. Skip the taffy entirely while in braces. The good news: a sealed bag of taffy keeps for months, so save it for the celebration after your braces come off.

Are summer fruits like watermelon and peaches safe?

Yes, most soft summer fruits are perfectly fine and even encouraged. Watermelon, peaches, ripe berries, and bananas are all Tier 5 foods. Just be careful with whole apples and unripe pears. Slice them first to bring them down to Tier 2 safe. Pits and stems should always be removed.

Can Invisalign patients eat anything they want?

Invisalign patients have more dietary freedom than braces patients, but with two important rules. First, only water with aligners in (no coffee, soda, sports drinks, or juice). Second, brush your teeth before reinserting aligners after meals to avoid trapping sugar and acids against your enamel. The food rules above still apply when aligners are out.

What if I accidentally eat a Tier 1 food?

Check your braces right away. If everything looks intact and there's no pain, you may have gotten lucky. Watch for any loose brackets, broken wires, or unusual discomfort over the next few days. If you notice anything wrong, call us promptly. The earlier we catch a problem, the easier the fix.
