TMJ & TMD
Understanding TMJ/TMD: Jaw Pain, Clicking, and Bite Issues
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that lets you talk, chew, and yawn—so when it’s irritated, everyday life hurts. TMJ/TMD symptoms can include jaw pain or stiffness, headaches and neck aches, clicking or popping, limited opening, tooth wear, and bite changes. While noises alone don’t always mean a disorder, persistent discomfort or functional problems should be evaluated. At Brayces Orthodontics in South Jersey—serving Somers Point, Absecon, Marmora, Wildwood, and Egg Harbor Township—our doctors assess your joints, muscles, bite, and habits (clenching, grinding, posture, airway) to pinpoint causes and recommend conservative, evidence-based care.
How We Diagnose & Treat TMJ/TMD Conservatively
Your visit may include a TMJ exam, bite analysis, and digital imaging to evaluate the joint tissues and the way your teeth fit together. Many patients feel relief with a stepwise plan: short-term anti-inflammatories and cold compresses, habit and posture coaching, and a custom nightguard/splint to reduce clenching and protect teeth. If your bite contributes to muscle strain, our orthodontists can discuss orthodontic corrections (braces or aligners) or retainer-based stabilization to improve function. For acute flare-ups, we focus on comfort and tissue healing first; complex cases may involve coordination with your general dentist, physical therapist, or medical specialist. Our goal is to minimize invasiveness, relieve pain, and restore healthy jaw function.
Self-Care Tips & When to Call
Between visits, support your jaw with soft foods, smaller bites, and avoiding hard, sticky, or chewy items (e.g., crusty bread, popcorn, nuts, gum). Limit extreme opening; use a fist under the chin when yawning. Keep teeth apart, lips together, tongue to the palate to relax facial muscles. Skip nail-biting, pen chewing, and leaning on your jaw. Prioritize good posture, stress reduction, and limit nicotine/caffeine. For new muscle soreness, try ice packs 10–15 minutes, twice daily, and OTC pain relief as directed. If you notice escalating pain, locking, frequent headaches, or bite changes, schedule a TMJ consultation—our board-certified team will create a personalized plan to protect your jaw, teeth, and long-term oral health.
